Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Marbles Kids Museum is a hands-on, interactive museum for children, providing them a fun place to learn, play, and explore. The museum is geared toward families with children up to twelve years old and features four indoor galleries, two outdoor escapes, and an IMAX theatre.
The Wachovia IMAX Theatre at Marbles Kids Museum is North Carolina's only IMAX theatre capable of 3D shows, and one of only two IMAX theatres in the entire state. The screen is five stories high, and the sound system supplies 12,000 watts of surround sound. The theatre plays short IMAX documentaries, along with feature films that also appear in regular movie theatres.
The Challenge
Highly anticipated films such as The Polar Express or Harry Potter consistently resulted in lengthy queues of impatient moviegoers. This scenario prompted Marbles Kids Museum to seek an alternative to buying tickets or picking them up at will call.
The popularity of the IMAX Theatre at Marbles Kids Museum required a solution that could alleviate long lines and reduce man-hours at the box office. The non-profit museum also wanted to make it easier for patrons to visit.
The Solution
Tickets.com recommended deployment of its ProVenue® Automated Kiosk for ticket sales and will call pick-up. The kiosk solution became a hit with moviegoers, allowing them to bypass long lines at the box office and gain faster entry into the IMAX Theatre. The ticketing kiosk also improved traffic flow and created a better overall experience for theatre patrons.
Key Successes
Furthermore, with just 267 seats in its IMAX Theatre, Marbles Kids Museum wanted to enable patrons to purchase tickets in advance, especially for its most popular children’s films. This would help prevent parents and their kids from arriving to a sold-out show. Therefore, Tickets.com set up the kiosk for advance ticket sales, giving patrons an alternate, on-site “box office” where they could conveniently perform basic ticketing transactions.

The ProVenue® Automated Kiosk not only enabled Marbles Kids Museum to provide IMAX Theatre fans with a superior level of service and convenience, it significantly reduced staffing costs as well. The quick adoption of the kiosk technology by patrons helped Marbles Kids Museum decrease resource requirements by the equivalent of one half staff member per year – a savings of approximately 1,000 man-hours annually.
