Wolf Trap Celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2021 with New Technology

2021 marked the 50th anniversary for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts (Wolf Trap) and a sorely missed return to live events at the venue.

Wolf Trap is a unique venue in many ways.  For one, it is part of a nonprofit organization nestled inside of a National Park.  Secondly, performances at Wolf Trap cover the full spectrum of music and performing arts genres, and lastly, the venue operates three different stages for these events.  The Filene Center is an outdoor venue that can seat 7,000 patrons, while the outdoor Children’s Theater-in-the-Woods can seat about 800, and The Barns indoor venue is the smallest and can seat 382.

Bernard S. Berry III, Senior Director Ticket Services Wolf Trap, spoke on how grateful the Wolf Trap team is for the support the venue receives from its patrons,

“The community responded any way they could, supporting anything that we put out, whether it be streaming or fundraisers…  They (patrons) were going to make sure that Wolf Trap lasted through the pandemic.  Everything from the members saying to just ‘hold on to my tickets’ and making donations until we figured out what was going on, to the public saying ‘nope, we trust you’.  And when your spirits are low, as you are canceling shows, to be buoyed by the fact that the public not only would like to see you around, wants you to be around, needs you to be around, I don’t even know what to say about it other than, thank you.”

Tickets.com Interview | Bernard S. Berry III, Senior Director Ticket Services Wolf Trap

In 2021 when Wolf Trap re-opened its doors to the community, the box office team to worked closely with Tickets.com to temporarily create modified seating plans in the ProVenue®  ticketing platform and leaned in on digital, “…we adapted our ticket selling methods,”

The Wolf Trap team made key strategic changes including:

NASCAR Speeds Ahead with Ticketing Technology

NASCAR ticketing technology moves at the speed of, you guessed it, NASCAR.  Tickets.com sat down with Kari Gritton, Managing Director of Consumer Strategy at NASCAR to discuss the return to live racing with fans, how their strategies have evolved, and the technology that helped them manage the constant changes.

“We were days away from the NASCAR Cup Series at Homestead Miami Speedway when all of sports and live entertainment shut down,” said Gritton.

Wolf Trap and Tickets.com bring the remarkable to Shriners Hospitals for Children® patient

( Vienna, VA) – September marks the start of fall and the end of the summer season at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap. To mark the end of the season, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Tickets.com put together a special experience for an extraordinary Shriners Hospitals for Children patient, José and his family.

José the Musician:

The Philadelphia team at Shriners Hospitals for Children has seen lots of talented patients pass through their doors. Few patients have had the ability to quiet a room like José.

José, professionally known as José André, is a piano prodigy who plays Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin American, and World Music. He also happens to be blind.  At the young age of 16, he has already performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Blues Alley, and the Library of Congress. He has also performed internationally in Rome, Kuala Lumpur, and Finland. Along the way, he has shared the stage with various notable artists, including Grammy winners Marcus Miller and Renée Fleming.

José has been playing piano since he was three and a half years old and what is even more surprising is that neither of his parents are serious musicians. He plays the piano by ear and loves to improvise and play along with others. Although he still shares similar interests with many other teenagers, José’s biggest passion has always been music.

“I feel happiness and joy when I play the piano because music is life for me,” said José.

The Wolf Trap and Tickets.com Experience:

To celebrate this incredible musician, Wolf Trap and Tickets.com treated José and his family to a musical evening under the stars featuring Lake Street Dive, a quartet known for their indie rock infused take on classic jazz and soul.

The evening included VIP seats to the Lake Street Dive concert on September 9, exclusive access to Wolf Trap’s Encore Circle Lounge and dinner accommodations on site at The Fermented Pig BBQ at OVATIONS with complimentary drinks, and gifts from Tickets.com and Wolf Trap.

More About José:

Born with cerebral palsy, José began his Shriners Hospital journey after his mother, Giovanna, saw a TV commercial that encouraged her to reach out to the hospital. They were looking for alternative treatments to help with José’s walking.

Over the years, José has received surgery and physical therapy to help straighten and strengthen his legs.. Many staff have come to know him as a hard-working patient with an winning smile and positive attitude about life.

“José is an incredible young man with a huge heart, and it is always a pleasure working with him to help him walk with his walker so he can be more independent when not in his wheelchair,” said Mallory Meyer, DPT, senior physical therapist. “Regardless of what José is going through, he always ensures that the people around him are doing well and can bring a smile to anyone’s face by simply saying hello, talking about football (soccer), and of course by using his incredible talent of playing the piano so beautifully.”

Most people would never know the amount of pain José experienced while walking. Although his walking has improved significantly, he still uses his wheelchair for long distances. He and his parents are grateful for all the profound effect that Shriners Hospital has had on José’s life.

“The care received at Shriners [Hospital] made a huge impact on his life,” said José’s mom, Giovanna. “His legs are straighter because of his surgery. His physical therapy helps him gain strength in his legs, and his occupational therapy helps him gain independence in his daily living skills. José also got a customized wheelchair that he uses for school and helps make things a lot more comfortable for him.”

José’s mom/manager continues to share his story as they travel around the world. She hopes that she can encourage other parents to seek care for children with special needs and that José inspires others with disabilities to follow their dreams.

“José Andre has a special journey, and he has been fortunate to meet people that care for him and helped him achieve his goals,” said Giovanna. “His goal is to be able to have a life that is not defined by his disabilities, but it is modeled by his abilities.”

CrowdConnect Email Opens on Mobile Devices

Email Marketing: Opens by Device

Did you know that roughly 85% of email subscribers use smart phones to access email?  And roughly 70% of mobile users delete badly formatted messages in under three seconds?

Time is short.  Consider simple ways you can learn about your subscribers to improve your ticket sales on mobile.

Opens by Device

Opens by device is a quick report to understand whether your subscribers are opening emails on a mobile device or on a desktop.   If you host a variety of events at your venue, this can also be a helpful tool to identifying which events are more likely to be opened on a mobile or desktop.

5 Quick Creative Considerations for Marketing Events on Mobile

  1. Short subject lines. Longer subject lines may not display on a mobile device.
  2. Keep images to under 600-pixel width. Some mobile devices can’t handle responsive designs.
  3. Use a large font. A small screen makes fonts smaller, consider using a 14-pixel font to make it easier on the eyes.
  4. Create a simple call to action. A button is an easy way to identify where a patron should click where as an image does not have that same effect.
  5. Use a single-column templates. Multiple columns may condense and be hard to navigate on a small device.

CrowdConnect the Tickets.com official email marketing platform makes it easy to look at Open by device metrics.

If you are a current client interested in learning more about the Open by device reports within CrowdConnect, read on from our Knowledge Base.

(Vienna, VA) – Last weekend, Tickets.com was proud to sponsor the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts 50th Anniversary Gala, an event as bright and beautiful as the venue. All proceeds from the event directly support Wolf Trap Foundation’s arts and education community programs.

The evening began with a sip at the cocktail reception and sparkling conversations.  Dinner was served in the recently renovated open-air pavilions located throughout the Park, whose grand, heavy timber, al-fresco structures were trimmed from table-top to tree-lines with lanterns, and décor that echoed of the natural surroundings. The dining experience was both elegant and fantastical with a locally sourced, fall-inspired menu.  After dinner, guests were escorted to the Filene Center for remarks from Wolf Trap Foundation leadership and a private performance by The Avett Brothers.

Daytona, FL– September 2, 2021.  Last Saturday, Tickets.com headed down to Daytona Florida to participate in the NASCAR Technology Partner event during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series Race.

The Technology Partner event provided an opportunity to engage in discussions about the transformations NASCAR is making to improve race events, increase ticket sales, accelerate marketing efforts, and streamline operations.  This inaugural event was aptly themed Technology at the Speed of NASCAR. Speakers included the entire NASCAR technology team headed up by Christine Stoffel-Moffett, Vice President, Enterprise Technology.  At the event speakers shared how infrastructure and data quality and quantity have grown in every facet of the sport.

Ticketing Technology at the Speed of Nascar

With the Daytona International Speedway and the final race before the NASCAR playoffs as a back drop, the presentation showcased how access to technology and fan data are transformational in increasing personalized fan experiences and fan engagement within the sport.  The ProVenue platform (the back-office ticketing solution from Tickets.com), is now parked in the NASCAR Data Garage for improved audience segmentation and the start of automated processes.   NASCAR also is deep into learning from scan data provided by Alfred, Tickets.com’s custom all-in-one access control solution, to understand fan movements at events.

“NASCAR has truly embraced technology as the path to improving fan experiences and we are proud to be part of this process to build the best in fan experiences.”
