Exploration and Reinvention in Memphis with the Museum of Science & History (MoSH)

BlogConversionsCC

In 2020 the Museum of Science & History (MoSH) was on the precipice of launching a 5-year strategic plan to reinvigorate the organization. A new Executive Director was in place, plans for a rebrand were being contemplated, and then the pandemic hit. But while live events were put on pause, the team at MoSH dove head-on into research and testing for their long-term strategic vision.

Strategic Vision

Beyond a new look, the strategic focus was to create a more inviting space to increase engagement with patrons and to foster more curiosity in every patron touchpoint. Everything from new content to new communication strategies to new technologies were explored.

The MoSH team even collaborated with the national Metal Museum in Memphis to install a twenty-five-foot statue of a Mosasaur to greet incoming patrons. Part of creating an inviting space comes from making a less intrusive ticketing experience. Jeff King, Director of Guest Services commented, “The less you notice the ticketing experience, the better,” which is in part why moving to digital tickets was so important to MoSH.

What’s has wings but cannot fly, and can weather the storm of a pandemic?

The Youngstown State University Penguins.

Long-standing Tickets.com partner, Youngstown State University (YSU) upgraded to ProVenue® and MyProVenue just prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.   At the box office, YSU suspended in-person sales and implemented QR codes to reduce crowding on game days. By prompting Penguin fans and students to access MyProVenue for purchases and managing their tickets, the box office team was able to drive more operations online and reduce their on-site staff.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Tickets.com.  Upgrading to ProVenue has already proven to be the right choice.  There has been a steady increase in our online football and basketball sales.  The Tickets.com staff has always been available to assist with remote training,” said Ron Strollo, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Youngstown State University.

Currently, YSU is utilizing the Zebra hand-held scanners powered by Alfred, the all-in-one access control solution from Tickets.com. Zebra technologies provide a cost-effective hand-held ticket scanning solution for the ultimate on-site efficiency.

Erie County Fair | The Best of Summer with Digital Tickets

Hamburg, NY  Tickets.com and Erie County Agricultural Society made history at the 181st Erie County Fair (Fair) in Western New York in the summer of 2021. For the first time ever, the ‘Best 12 Days of Summer’ admission tickets were sold exclusively online through MyProVenue™, the Tickets.com web application for digital tickets.

Under the cloud of the pandemic, the Fair had a compressed timeline for planning, marketing, and selling tickets to their GUSTO Grandstand events as well as fair admissions. Events and operations were pulled together in just over 80 days once state and county officials provided final approval and guidelines when normally the planning process would be a year in the making. That’s 285 days less, for those of you doing the math.

The 2021 Fair Experience

Though the team knew the Fair would not look the same, it would remain true to the values and traditions that are reminiscent of the annual event. The team was anxious to provide families with the opportunity to create memories in person, get back to tradition, where patrons could immerse themselves in a world of ‘Summertopia’ with the traditional crazy foods, cute animals, top-notch competition, spinning rides, and just plain fun entertainment.

The adjustments started with online-only ticket sales while in previous years patrons could make purchases in retail locations. Ticket inventory was adjusted and re-adjusted for events at the Fair Grandstand, the aisle walkways were widened and vendors were limited to increase social distance, and the Fair also offered free parking to limit contact touchpoints.   With staffing shortages, the 2021 Fair was very different.

To support the Hispanic Scholarship Fund for educational programs

T.Cares provided families within the La Plaza Inc. community with complimentary tickets and event t-t-shirts to the Indianapolis Indians game along with food and beverage vouchers.

The game began with an on-field performance by Grupo Folclorico Macehuani, an Indianapolis dance group focused on preserving Mexican culture and traditions through dance and music. Wolf Trap and Tickets.com bring the remarkable to Shriners Hospitals for Children® patient

( Vienna, VA) – September marks the start of fall and the end of the summer season at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap. To mark the end of the season, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Tickets.com put together a special experience for an extraordinary Shriners Hospitals for Children patient, José and his family.

José the Musician:

The Philadelphia team at Shriners Hospitals for Children has seen lots of talented patients pass through their doors. Few patients have had the ability to quiet a room like José.

José, professionally known as José André, is a piano prodigy who plays Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin American, and World Music. He also happens to be blind.  At the young age of 16, he has already performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Blues Alley, and the Library of Congress. He has also performed internationally in Rome, Kuala Lumpur, and Finland. Along the way, he has shared the stage with various notable artists, including Grammy winners Marcus Miller and Renée Fleming.

José has been playing piano since he was three and a half years old and what is even more surprising is that neither of his parents are serious musicians. He plays the piano by ear and loves to improvise and play along with others. Although he still shares similar interests with many other teenagers, José’s biggest passion has always been music.

“I feel happiness and joy when I play the piano because music is life for me,” said José.

The Wolf Trap and Tickets.com Experience:

To celebrate this incredible musician, Wolf Trap and Tickets.com treated José and his family to a musical evening under the stars featuring Lake Street Dive, a quartet known for their indie rock infused take on classic jazz and soul.

The evening included VIP seats to the Lake Street Dive concert on September 9, exclusive access to Wolf Trap’s Encore Circle Lounge and dinner accommodations on site at The Fermented Pig BBQ at OVATIONS with complimentary drinks, and gifts from Tickets.com and Wolf Trap.

More About José:

Born with cerebral palsy, José began his Shriners Hospital journey after his mother, Giovanna, saw a TV commercial that encouraged her to reach out to the hospital. They were looking for alternative treatments to help with José’s walking.

Over the years, José has received surgery and physical therapy to help straighten and strengthen his legs.. Many staff have come to know him as a hard-working patient with an winning smile and positive attitude about life.

“José is an incredible young man with a huge heart, and it is always a pleasure working with him to help him walk with his walker so he can be more independent when not in his wheelchair,” said Mallory Meyer, DPT, senior physical therapist. “Regardless of what José is going through, he always ensures that the people around him are doing well and can bring a smile to anyone’s face by simply saying hello, talking about football (soccer), and of course by using his incredible talent of playing the piano so beautifully.”

Most people would never know the amount of pain José experienced while walking. Although his walking has improved significantly, he still uses his wheelchair for long distances. He and his parents are grateful for all the profound effect that Shriners Hospital has had on José’s life.

“The care received at Shriners [Hospital] made a huge impact on his life,” said José’s mom, Giovanna. “His legs are straighter because of his surgery. His physical therapy helps him gain strength in his legs, and his occupational therapy helps him gain independence in his daily living skills. José also got a customized wheelchair that he uses for school and helps make things a lot more comfortable for him.”

José’s mom/manager continues to share his story as they travel around the world. She hopes that she can encourage other parents to seek care for children with special needs and that José inspires others with disabilities to follow their dreams.

“José Andre has a special journey, and he has been fortunate to meet people that care for him and helped him achieve his goals,” said Giovanna. “His goal is to be able to have a life that is not defined by his disabilities, but it is modeled by his abilities.”

Email Preferences

Email Marketing: What Do You Prefer?

Do you want to deliver carefully personalized, deeply engaging content to your patrons and subscribers?  All you have to do is ask them.

A preference site campaign is a great way to provide your subscribers options.  That way they can decide exactly what type of content to receive from you.

The more you know about a subscriber, the more targeted content you can create to increase their engagement.  Sell the right event to the right patron.

What is a preference site?

An email preference site (or center) allows your subscribers to choose from a variety of settings to help improve your communication with them.  Preference centers build trust and relevance into your marketing campaigns by giving your subscribers greater control over the communication flow. The more control you give recipients, the more likely they are to engage positively with your brand.

Consider what to ask.

  • Frequency of messages
  • Kinds of messages (newsletters vs. special offers)
  • Their personal interests: events / genres of events you offer (concerts, sports, etc.)

Did you know?

Personalization increases subscriber and patron loyalty. And as a result, subscribers are willing to  share more information with you.

In CrowdConnect you can quickly build a preference site campaign that will help you reach your communication goals.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas Performing Arts Center: Live & Streaming Virtual Events

LAS VEGAS, NV – The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Performing Arts Center (UNLV Performing Arts Center) has shared a ticketing partnership for over 30 years with Tickets.com.  The UNLV Performing Arts Center is host to classical music, self-titled events, performance series from New York, around the world, and more.   Since 1990, Tickets.com and the UNLV Performing Arts Center have ticketed inspiring performances to the campus community.

Like so many venues, the last year for the UNLV Performing Arts Center was filled with unforeseen schedule interruptions and new restrictions for the safety and health of performers, staff, and patrons.  Faced with many challenges, the UNLV Performing Arts Center and Tickets.com persevered and converted many performances to virtual events.

The Technology

Through modifications in setup and purchase flow, the UNLV Performing Arts Center leveraged ProVenue®, Tickets.com’s comprehensive ticketing solution, and MyProVenue™, the patron-facing digital ticket complement, to ticket both Live and Pre-Recorded events.

Adjustments included educating patrons on new processes, updating delivery type, adding information to confirmation emails, and generating extra email communication for virtual links close to the event(s).

Education

As part of the patron adjustment period to virtual, the UNLV Performing Arts Center created and distributed a number of videos to help explain streaming, ticketing, and accessing virtual events.

Live & Pre-Recorded Events

With a mixture of tastes and disciplines, the UNLV Performing Arts Center was able to host several live and pre-recorded events.  In February, the UNLV Performing Arts Center hosted “Live from the UNLV PAC: Ricardo Cobo in a Benefit Concert,” a virtual event that patrons/students could watch live with proceeds to help cover some costs the UNLV Performing Arts Center incurred due to the pandemic.  Other pre-recorded events, such as “Sur La Table,” which runs through April 30th, are available for patrons to stream during a set time period.

The Hartford Symphony Spotlights Virtual Events

HARTFORD, CT – The Bushnell has been host to a myriad of performances in the greater Hartford area for over 90 years. Since 1992, The Bushnell and Tickets.com have shared a ticketing relationship bringing over 20,000 performances to the community.

During the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic brought venues challenges like never before, including temporary closures and new restrictions.  Throughout the pandemic, despite the restrictions and challenges, The Bushnell and Tickets.com were able to bring The Hartford Symphony Orchestra® performances to the community.

Using Tickets.com’s comprehensive ticketing solution ProVenue®, as well as MyProVenue™, the patron-facing digital ticket complement, The Hartford Symphony Orchestra held summer events with limited capacity outdoors and indoor virtual events in colder weather.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO)

In July of 2020, HSO once again began performing live with the Summer Splash! Series.  To prioritize safety for performers as well as patrons, modifications on the ticket purchase flow and ProVenue set up had to be made including attendance caps, online-only sales, extended seat definitions for COVID waivers, and disabling ticket-forwarding.

As colder weather arrived and restrictions increased, HSO created the Spotlight Series. A brand-new way to experience the HSO, the Spotlight Series performances, which are still available through June, feature smaller ensemble collections recorded at venues in and around Hartford to be purchased and viewed as a virtual event.  For these events, The Bushnell created new delivery types and buyer types in ProVenue for streaming/virtual, as well as modified order confirmations to include a link with event information details.  Additionally in MyProVenue, featured promotions were set up to help communicate further details on these virtual events.
